Pirate group apologizes to Mr. T
One of the several controversies involving Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight,” which opens in Spokane on Friday, involves the pirating of the film that many Tarantino fans have engaged in. I was at a gathering on Christmas evening and heard one young moviegoer nonchalantly admit that he was going to watch it later that night.
The fact that he didn’t succeed wasn’t for want of trying. The pirate link he was trying to use apparently just didn’t work.
Now comes word , through CNN, that a number of those who illegally downloaded Tarantino’s film “are now having a serious case of pirates’ remorse.”
Their reasoning, it seems, is clear: “We wanted to share this movie with the people who are not rich enough or not able to watch all nominated movies in the cinema,” the pirate Hive-CM8 said on Reddit .
Tarantino’s reaction? Well, the director of “Pulp Fiction,” “Reservoir Dogs” and other films has been quoted saying he himself has resorted to pirating. So maybe this is just a case of karma.
Whatever, I plan on seeing the film later today. In full 70mm , just as the karma king wants me to (though not, I admit, in Spokane).
But don’t think I’m trying to act all superior or everything. It’s more that I’m too old and clueless to figure out how to see it any other way.
