Longtime Idaho Judge Larry Boyle, who served as a U.S. magistrate judge, an Idaho Supreme Court justice and a state district judge, has died at the age of 74 of complications from Parkinson’s disease; he died on Thanksgiving Day. His full obituary is online here, and the Idaho Statesman has a full report here.

Boyle was highly regarded by his colleagues in the bar, and was recognized by the Idaho State Bar Association in 2011 for “exemplary conduct, professionalism, and years of dedicated service to the legal profession, and to the citizens of the State of Idaho.” He served as a state and federal judge for 25 years.

A prolific writer and frequent contributor to various legal journals and publications, Boyle was a visiting lecturer at law schools and at the U.S. Department of Justice National Advocacy College, and traveled to former member states of the Soviet Union and to Pakistan to share his knowledge and expertise.

Born and raised in Pocatello, he graduated from Brigham Young University in 1969 and earned his law degree from the University of Idaho in 1972. A U.S. Army veteran, he served a two-year LDS mission in Ireland. His obituary notes that “despite his lifelong affiliation with the Democratic Party, he was appointed by Republican President George H.S Bush as a federal magistrate judge.” That was in 1992; he was reappointed to a second eight-year term in 2000, and continued to serve as a recalled magistrate judge after his term, at the request of the court.

He also was actively involved in court governance. He was appointed by the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court to an unprecedented three terms on the Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System; chaired the Magistrate Judges Executive Board of the Ninth Circuit; and served on district and circuit committees involved in studies of race, religion, ethnic and gender fairness.

A successful youth sports coach, Boyle coached baseball and basketball, and coached his sons’ teams to state championships and a world series.

Boyle is survived by his wife, Beverly Rigby Boyle, five sons, one daughter, and 24 grandchildren.
