Arsonists Target 9/11 Memorial In Lake City

“It’s just very disappointing,” said Coeur d’Alene Deputy Chief Glenn Lauper about the vandalism that occurred at the soon-to-be- dedicated Fallen Heroes Plaza at Cherry Hill Park in Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday. The damage apparently happened Tuesday night. Plans for the dedication will remain as planned on Thursday morning.

Deputy Chief Lauper discovered that 4 different arsons had taken place at the park over night. The most significant is damage to one of the basalt columns. A draping cloth covering the column that is to be unveiled at a groundbreaking ceremony on September 11th 2008 had been lit on fire and melted into the basalt column. Fire Department personnel are attempting to repair the memorial before tomorrow’s ceremony. It is unknown at this time if the site is repairable, however the ceremony will proceed as planned/Sgt.
