‘Unconditional Surrender’ Staying Put

"Unconditional Surrender,"  which was modeled after a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt taken in Times Square on V-J Day at the end of World War II, is shown in San Diego. The three-ton painted sculpture has been on loan from a Santa Monica nonprofit since 2007, and the often-extended deadline for its return was supposed to be in May. But Tuesday port commissioners ruled it can stay for one more year while fans try to raise at least a half-million dollars for a permanent bronze version. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi, File)
