Letters, we get letters
I continue my search for the perfect quote. But the following message, sent to me on Friday, comes close:
“I know this is cheating, but since you had the good taste to quote the great
George Orwell
:
‘If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what
they do not want to hear.’
(Even if it’s about St. Terese)
From Kafka :
‘You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world, that is
something you are free to do and it accords with your nature, but perhaps
this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid.’
or
‘A book should serve as the ax for the frozen sea within us.’
(Perhaps too topical, that one).
Or Hume :
‘Nothing is more surprising than the easiness with which the many are
governed by the few.’
yet…
Finding the perfect quote is like finding the perfect star; only when I see a night sky full of stars do I ever mutter ‘now this is
perfection.’ Or, I might tell you that the best star is the one nearest
you, (and thus nearest your heart). Only YOU know what is the perfect quote
for you.’
Imagine me bowing, arms extended, imitating Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar by chanting, “We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy.” My only regret: I couldn’t recognize the e-mail address, so I can’t identify the sender.
Mi dispiace moltissimo.
