Hiawatha Trail attracts record visitation in July

Boosted by publicity and interest in the 100th anniversary of the 1910 forest fire blow up, the Route of the Hiawatha rail trail set a visitation record of 34,249 this summer. (File)

TRAILS — The Route of the Hiawatha — a 15-mile rail trail that crosses the Montana-Idaho border south of Interstate 90 — has set a record visitation of 15,100 bicyclists in July.

The previous record was 13,046 set in July 2015, says Phil Edholm of Lookout Pass Ski Area, which co-manages the route and offers shuttles and hybrid bicycle rentals.

The Route of the Hiawatha, with its seven trestles and 10 tunnels, was named a Hall of Fame Trail by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy , one of only 15 such designations in the country.

USA Today named the Hiawatha the #1 Trail of its kind in the country.
