The bins continue to fill up

Remember the South Perry Sock Drive? The South Perry Business and Neighborhood Association started a sock and boot drive in early December; if you spend time in the neighborhood you've seen the collection bins at Perry Street Pizza, The Shop and other local merchants.

Well, the bins continue to fill up and Heidi Hash, a parent volunteer at Grant Elementary, now has a whole pile of hats, scarves, gloves, jackets and boots in her basement. This is the third pile, mind you, that has been donated.

Hash works with the school counselors and teachers at Grant to determine which students need winter clothing the most.

"We just gave a out a bunch of coats, that felt really good," said Hash last week. "And I have all these matching hats and scarves that someone knitted and donated. We are thinking of doing a special give-away for those with the older girls at Grant."

It's not too late to donate - socks and boots are in especially high demand, and they will be badly needed as the expected snow storm moves in tomorrow.
