To spell or not to spell…
“Logorrhea.” If that word sounds familiar to you, then you’re either a good speller or you’ve seen the movie “Spellbound,” the Oscar-nominated documentary about eight young contestants in the 1999 National Spelling Bee.
Anyone who has ever watched the bee, which is broadcast annually on ESPN, knows what the national contest is like. Some 249 kids from all over the nation meet in Washington, D.C., and over two days spell, and/or misspell, words until only one is left. Director Jeffrey Blitz profiles each of the chosen eight, who live in various parts of the country — California to Florida, Texas to Connecticut.
We get to know each , and we agonize as each is forced to spell words that most of us have never even heard of. The winner in this case is… well, that’s something that you’ll have to see for yourself if, or when, the movie ever comes to Spokane.
If it does, then it’ll probably come to The Mett… er, Mete… er, Met. Something like that. I’d probably have learned how to spell it if I didn’t suffer from… logorrhea .
