A movie by any other name

Dan

The movie on Starz this morning is “Demolition Man,” the futuristic thriller flick that pits Sylvester Stallone against villain Wesley Snipes. Stallone carries the appropriately macho name of John Spartan, which is barely more laughable than the movie itself.

But does being ridiculous make the movie in question necessarily bad, and therefore not worth watching? Please. Nothing beats the scene in which Stallone is frozen in goo, which begins his supposed 70-year sentence. Besides, “Demolition Man” features one of Sandra Bullock’s earliest, and most charming, performances.

And then take “Morvern Callar,” which San Diego movie critic Duncan Shepard calls “off-putting.” It’s all about a woman (Samantha Morton) who discovers her boyfriend’s nude corpse under the Christmas tree, puts her name on his unpublished novel, is paid a $100,000 advance and gradually discovers a new life — all while her boyfriend’s body lies rotting in the living room. Mmmmm, tasty.

Hey, not every movie is something that Barney would be willing to dance to. So “Morvern Callar” is on the evening’s menu. Who knows? It just might turn out to be worth my while. Can it be any worse than Sandra Bullock, as I type this, expressing consternation about three “murder-death-kills” in her fair futuristic city?

Go Zags.
