MovieJuice: my choice for California governor

Dan

Mark Ramsey, more popularly known as MovieJuice , is one of the more clever film critics in the country. No matter how bad a film is, Ramsey can make it worth watching just to better understand, and enjoy, the many and varied ways he can trash it. And, no, I’m not being cynical. I truly love this guy. And he truly does love movies.

In light of a recent prickly press release that the — and I quote here — Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent out to the media, Ramsey’s latest bit of satire is funnier than “Gigli” — the only difference being that Ramsey is TRYING to be funny. It’s also a pretty smart comment on the film, uh, “business.”

That press release, by the way, was the Academy’s way of clarifying three things: 1. Jack Valenti is NOT the Academy president. He is, instead, president of the Motion Picture Association of America — “an organization made up of the major film distribution companies .” 2, The Academy does not send out “studio ‘screeners.’ ” In the words of Academy director of communications John Pavlik, “We have always urged our members to see the film on the big screen the way they were intended to be seen and to base their judgments of the achievements contained in the film on those viewings, and not to vote based upon an image seen on the television screen.” 3, And, finally, the proper name of the Academy is as I wrote it in the second paragraph above.

I say Mark Ramsey should be president of both the Academy and the MPAA. He, at least, doesn’t take himself more seriously than world hunger .
