Global warming? How about a plot, man?

Dan

Here’s Roland Emmerich’ “The Day After Tomorrow” in a test tube: Brave but workaholic dad (Dennis Quaid) battles disbelieving politicians (Kenneth Welsh et al) while trying to convince the world that a new ice age is coming. Meanwhile, his brilliant but underachieving son (Jake Gyllenhall) proves himself a survivor (and falls in love with Laura Chapman), self-sacrificing physician mom (Sela Ward) mom saves Kid With Cancer and funny homeless guy (Glenn Plummer) provides nearly as much comic relief as nameless weathercaster does when he most deservedly gets his.

KO, so forget the questionable science (global warming causing a new ice age). Forget the time collapse of the catastrophic event from several thousand years to, uh, this afternoon. Forget the barely adequate acting from the standard troupe of characters: No, the worst thing about this blockbuster by the guy who directed “Independence Day” (good) and “Godzilla” (bad) is the fact that it has no ending. It dissipates just as the digital snowstorm does, with a sequel ready to go once the first $300 million is made.

Good luck. A new ice age could come first.
