The Slice: About the comics … nevermind
I knew it was no laughing matter. Last Sunday’s review of the S-R’s comics lineup prompted a small avalanche of responses.
Almost all were good-natured. But to say readers disagree about the merits of the various strips would be a gross understatement.
I will pass the messages along in their entirety to persons more influential in these matters. Before I do, though, let me share just a little of what a few of my correspondents had to say.
“The weird cat rocks, Paul,” wrote “Get Fuzzy” fan Peter Nufer.
“The S-R currently has some old, tired and unfunny strips running simply because this area is assumed to be conservative and old-fashioned,” wrote Lynn Walker.
” ‘For Better or for Worse’ is definitely No. 1 with me,” wrote Jean Imperatrice.
“Thank whoever should be thanked for tossing ‘Piranha Club,’ ” wrote Bonnie Meyer.
” ‘Mutts’ is non-funny and poorly drawn,” wrote Larry Blanchard.
” ‘Adam’ makes no sense at all,” wrote Don Dundon.
” ‘Opus’ is pretentious, sometimes engaging,” wrote Steve Turner.
“Don’t like ‘Garfield,’ ” wrote Chris and Bob Anderlik.
” ‘Peanuts’ is still the best,” wrote Wanita Cary.
“Doonesboring,” wrote David Goehner.
“I really miss ‘Calvin,’ ” wrote Tom Frisque.
” ‘Zits,’ ” wrote Lindsey Carpenter. “I am a teenager and most of the content is actually very true.”
” ‘Blondie’ is due for retirement,” wrote Gary W. Smith.
” ‘Dilbert,’ ” wrote Bob Sword. “Gotta have it seven days a week.”
“I read ‘em all, except usually skip ‘Dilbert,’ ” wrote Marjorie Young.
” ‘Dennis the Menace’: 10 (on a scale of 1-10),” wrote K.C. Stacy.
” ‘Rose is Rose,’ ” wrote John Robideaux. “Intelligent wit.”
“Bring back ‘Cathy,’ ” wrote Linda Hall.
” ‘B.C.’ is a very, very sad thing,” wrote Eric Walker. “For it shows over its lifetime the decline and fall of a human mind.”
“The Spokesman-Review has better comics than most papers,” wrote Kerry Masters.
“I’d like to see some of the old ones like ‘Wizard of Id’ come back,” wrote Allan Morrison.
” ‘Six Chix’ nix,” wrote Elaine Bartlett.
” ‘Doonesbury’ is the only cartoon with political content that’s funny,” wrote Mark Doerr.
“Political cartoons have no business being on the comic page,” wrote Dora Brown.
“I always read ‘Opus,’ ‘Mutts,’ ‘Dilbert,’ and Non Sequitur,’ ” wrote Chris Bowers.
“Have a section called ‘Political Assassination,’ ” wrote Gary Post. “That would be perfect for you folks.”
“I pretty much enjoy them all, with the notable exception of ‘Prickly City,’ ” wrote John Simanton.
Thanks for the feedback.
