Heading into summer, time for a mystery

Dan

It’s time to pick the next three read for The Spokesman-Review Book Club . Let’s plunge into spring with a detective novel. J.A. Jance’s “Trial by Fury” seems like a good choice. In this, her third J.P. Beaumont novel, Jance – who splits time between Seattle (where she got her start) and Arizona –has the troubled homicide cop investigate the death of a high school basketball coach.

In June, we’ll return to nonfiction by taking a look at “Give a Boy a Gun,” a book that is arguably the best of the late Jack Olsen . And in July, we’ll tackle “Middle Passage,” the National Book Award -winner by University of Washington English professor Charles Johnson .

The thing that sets The SR’s Book Club apart from all others is the fact that we concentrate solely on the literature of the Pacific Northwest. We’ve been going since November of 2002, and we haven’t begun to tap all the talent that resides, or has resided, in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

And recommendations are always welcomed.
