It’s a life only a man can bear

I’m typing this from the living room of my friend Leslie Kelly , who lives with her husband John and daughter Claire in Memphis. I came to visit after a couple of years of putting her off by making one excuse after the next.

And what have I gained through the effort? This morning I ate grits, last night red beans and rice. We hit Sun Studio , then the home of soul music, Stax Records . While doing an art walk last night, I looked down the street at the hotel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. And for the rest of today? One, we plan on visiting the Civil Rights Museum . Two, we plan on seeing the documentary film “Grizzly Man.”

Yeah, I know. Busman’s holiday. But as I’ve said many times before, it’s a fortunate man who can shape his career to accommodate his life’s main obsession.
