*Would you think I was conceited if I mentioned that Huckleberries earned a second place in the national Herb Caen Memorial Column Writing contest? I’m pretty proud of it. Smiley Anders from Baton Rouge grabbed the gold rings. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists posted all its winners last week here .

*Pageview numbers were off by more than half during my vacation, of course, but I was still able to post a third consecutive month of more than 100,000, finishing with 114,315 in June. I was delighted to hit 6098 on Thursday, June 23, two days before vacation.
