Death toll grows in London

Ken Sands

We try to be careful not to use death toll numbers in disaster headlines because it’s such a moving target. Yet, today, our subhead flatly stated: “37 dead, 700 hurt…” But the first thing you see on the AP wire this morning is a story that the death toll now is 49, and likely will grow substantially.

The wire desk did get good marks for selecting pieces that moved the story beyond the intial bombing news. It also was noted that most of the photos available on the wires came from the bus bombing because it was above-ground and in daylight.

Citizen journalism was evident on the web. Many citizens with cell phone cameras documented the disaster. We’re likely to see more of that in the future.

One of the most interesting “reads” of the day was the story about the peeping Tom who tried to convince the court that his ineptitude meant that he shouldn’t be convicted. The court disagreed.

For tomorrow, we want to watch whether teenager Michelle Wie makes the cut in a PGA tournament. If she survives, it will be the first time in roughly 60 years that a woman makes the cut.

Locally, we’re following up on the Groene story. There still are a lot of unanswered questions about the crimes and the investigation. We’re collecting court documents from the suspect’s criminal past (and present) and plan to post those online soon.

The Monroe Street Bridge is going to re-open! In September!

And we’re taking a look at the hospital in Davenport, Wash., which has a unique program that is a model for small-town hospitals everywhere.
