Steve Groene: “People like this should not be out in public” (“Federal act could curb sex offenders,” July 10). Who would disagree? With some 650,000 sex offenders nationwide, identity and notification to the police on the honor system is not working and the system is dangerous to the public. These people are invisible among their vulnerable prey. As the law of the land stands now, the public is not safe.

I suggest a nose piercing; make it nonremovable. People of all ages will be aware of the danger and take necessary precautions to keep us safe. While we are at it we could also pierce the offending appendage. The sex offender will have a reminder of his obligation to society.
