Trouble for Turiaf

Ken Paulman

Another breaking story caused a late-night shuffle in the paper - word of Ronny Turiaf’s heart condition came at a 9 p.m. press conference, and the sports staff - who are used to scrambling on deadline - punched out a story and column on short notice.

Is this bad news? Sure - but not in the same way that child killings are bad news. As columnist John Blanchette points out, even in a worst-case scenario, Turiaf still has a bright future ahead of him, even if that future doesn’t include the NBA (News is a Conversation contributer Marianne Love suggests a run for mayor ).

We’ll be following the story closely - a press conference is set for sometime today, and we’re doing more research on the specifics of Turiaf’s condition.

A picture is worth…

There’s a big difference between the photo of John Rollins Tuggle that you saw online yesterday (top right) and the photo that ran in today’s story (bottom right).

Investigators rely on the media to help track down fugitives, and they move as quickly as they can to get us photos to help in the search. The first photo you saw was from Tuggle’s driver’s license - the later (and presumably more accurate) photo was from Tuggle’s sex offender registration in Colorado.

Coming up

The aforementioned story on the impact of recent tragedies on the psyche of North Idaho is in the works - we’ll see how locals are handling the events.
