Inside Huckleberries — 6/15/05

*Today marks the beginning of my 36th year as a newspaperman. Whattaride.

*First, you should know that Jim O’Day was a young sports writer when I hired him at The Daily Inter Lake (Kalispell, Mont.). Onward. In a Missoulian article online today, I read that Jim is applying for the AD job at the University of Montana — and not once did he mention what a tremendous influence on had on his career. Then, mebbe there’s a reason for that. Good man from good newspaper stock. I wish him well. For Missoulian story, click here .

*The city dropped my wife’s ticket for parking in a handicap zone in front of the mayor’s shop — that was already occupied by another car (with a handicap sticker). Seems the spot is extra long and folks get snagged regularly by it. I hope that others have protested, rather than paid an undeserved ticket, and the city corrects the problem soon. Meanwhile, I need to go over and check out the elongated spot myself.

*Hat Tap — to Blogmeister Ryan for putting that new feature out front on the right side that shows the 4 or 5 most recent comments. It enables blurkers to see when something new is posted. (Blurker, for those of you new here, is the blogosphere’s name for someone who lurks but doesn’t comment. Most be a lotta you folks, judging from the daily pageview numbers.

*Here’s another Samizdata word: anti-idiotarian. I’m not going to name names here. But an anti-idiotarian is someone opposed to a whole raft of political values which are derived from a fundamentally irrational world view. A/I’s span the political spectrum and are characterized by a vocal rational judgmentalism, generally hawkish sentiments and transcendent loathing of Noam Chomsky . Remind you of Any One?

*HBO missed a single-day blog record by 155 Monday when pageviews hit 6379. But I’m not griping. The blog is starting to bump over 5000 a coupla times a week, and 6000 is serendipitous.
