Another Approach to Father’s Day

Now, that my kids are almost out of the nest, I wonder sometimes what they think of me. Did I do a good job? Both of the kids are doing well in life, college and have bright futures. Above all, they’re good people. That’s an indication that I did OK, although I suspect that my wife had more to do with their development than I did. By choice, way back when, she decided to stay home with the kids. And, I believe, they’re better off for it. My happiest memories are of her sitting on the couch with them, reading them their daily Bible devotions. Even at 19, Amy Dearest still snuggles up to her mother on the couch.

I don’t think I performed my part as well as my wife did. Too many times I was too fixated on work. But I made sure that my kids knew I loved them and appreciated them. And I attended almost every sports, drama or other extracurricular school function in which they were involved. Still, I could have done better. For those of you with children at home, I have this advice. Don’t waste your time chasing money. Your most valued possessions are right under your nose.

Feedback: My Dad kissed each of his four kids goodbye at 4AM before his 2 1/2 hour train ride to New York City and hugged us all when he got home around 7:00 PM. He always quietly wrote checks for the Church and charities when asked. He played with us a lot and made us do a fair amount of work around the house and yard. He loves my Mom and remains her constant companion at age 84. He taught me a lot and most all of it was good. My Dad is one of the most remarkable, unremarkable men you’d ever want to meet. — Stopthecrazygrowth.
