Best Post of the Swing Shift
To prevent school violence, it is necessary to fix the root of the problem- that is, when kids who are deemed by their peers to be “different” are bullied. As someone who walks the halls of a high school almost every day, I’ve seen my share of it. When we read accounts of these shootings, the shooter is almost always described as “a loner, wearing black, listening to metal music, playing video games, etc.” It isn’t that these things are the cause of the kid’s violent behavior; rather, they are outlets for peaceful rebellion and escape. It’s just that when the bullying gets to be too much, the peaceful rebellion turns deadly.
I went into this in more detail in an article I wrote last fall on my website here .
