The Slice: Women-ish things puzzle men-ish minds

Susan Rae's still nuts about Mrs. Netterblad.
 (The Spokesman-Review)

This will shock some of you. But men can be clueless. Yes, it’s true. Here’s some more evidence.

“As the busiest shopping season of the year approaches, I’d like to share a little tale with you and your readers,” wrote Laurie Cook of Post Falls.

“After 30-plus years of marriage, my husband still doesn’t get women or women-ish things.”

Women-ish things? Read on.

“It was the occasion of my 50th birthday, and I mentioned I’d love to receive diamond earrings. So off to Wal-Mart we went.

“As we peered down into the jewelry case, a pretty pair of diamond hoop earrings caught my eye.”

Her husband wasn’t sure.

“Yeah, those are nice,” he said. “But will they fit?”

“Let’s hear it for saving things: Susan Rae still has the decorative Pilgrim People she made in Mrs. Netterblad’s third-grade class at Madison Elementary in 1959. The carefully preserved Thanksgiving couple were crafted out of construction paper and paper napkins. They have walnuts for heads.

Rae’s mother displayed them seasonally for years. Now they are back in Rae’s possession.

“I will always cherish these nut heads,” said Rae, who has fond memories of Mrs. Netterblad.

“I can read spectacularly due to her,” she said.

“Speaking of Thanksgiving: I’ll send genuine reporter’s notebooks to the first three readers to phone or e-mail the name of the movie in which a state trooper asks, “Do you feel this vehicle is safe for highway travel?”

“Pet Names Department: During the winter of 1996, Steve and Sherri Rosinski drove from Priest River to Bonners Ferry in a blizzard to buy a Lhasa apso puppy.

They named the dog Stormy 96.

“Slice answer: “I believe ‘Spokane’ should be changed to ‘Neenerville.’ ” — Marlys Kissler, Odessa

“Just wondering: What little kid around here has embraced the tenets of good nutrition with the most unbridled zeal?

The Slice heard about a 6-year-old named Mariah who is evangelical in her enthusiasm for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, et cetera. Disappointed that she was being offered processed foods recently, she decided that Corn Flakes could be redeemed by a side dish of radishes.

“Ask about a warranty: A friend was on a driving trip Back East when he saw a sign, “Used Cows for Sale.”

Is there another kind?

“Survey says: Nearly one out of 10 women wear a bra 24 hours a day. Yes, even to sleep in.

(By the way, that survey was commissioned by Playtex. It wasn’t a Slice question.)

“Warm-up question for women: If you had a dollar for every bra you’ve worn over the years, how much money would you have?

“Today’s Slice questions: What’s the best thing about Spokane International Airport? What’s the worst thing?
