No, I don’t bleed Duck Green

Sitting here watching football ( Oregon-Fresno State, go Ducks!), I began to think about the great football movies that I’ve seen.

Let’s begin with “Friday Night Lights.” Based on the nonfiction book, it’s a look at small-town Texas football. Billy Bob was born to play the coach.

“All the Right Moves” is Tom Cruise, trying to get out of his small town by virtue of a football scholarship. Only a last-minute, slightly fantastic change of heart by Craig T. Nelson’s coach spoils things. And whatever happened to Lea Thompson ?

Let’s go with “Semi-Tough,” a football comedy that features Burt Reynolds as Billy Clyde Puckett. Dan Jenkins’ novel was handled better than most mainstream adaptations of best-sellers.

“North Dallas Forty” is yin to “Semi-Tough” yang. It has humor, as most Nick Nolte movies do, but it’s ultimate a look at the ugly side of professional football.

And we have to add at least one classic movie. So I’ll go with “Knute Rockne, All American,” which stars Pat O’Brien as the Notre Dame coach (with Ronald Reagan playing the doomed George Gipp).

And the movies that I wouldn’t put on my favorites list: “Brian’s Song” (maudlin), “Rudy” (cheesy), “Any Given Sunday” (Olive Stone directed it; enough said), “Remember the Titans” (bathetic), “Radio” (you have to be kidding).
