He squats in the rain
at the Albertson’s,
holding his cardboard sign
Help Me God Bless You.
A toothless grin framed
by a rough pepper beard.
I drive away and wonder
how much faith it must take
to ask God to bless us
with our groceries, our cars,
our warm jackets.
St. Peter will wave him in.
