Connecting with Steve Groene
We’ve been trying for weeks to get Steve Groene to return our calls, but our Olympia reporter Richard Roesler was finally able to catch up with him while reporting a story on the petition for a “one-strike” law for sex offenders. “That was a very improtant story for us,” senior editor Carla Savalli said. “Hopefully this will open the door for us.”
The drowning story
We’ve had a number of complaints this morning about Sunday’s story on the presumed drowning of real estate agent Gary Fox. The readers felt the story’s ending was insensitive and flippant:
On Friday, the couple was heading to Carlin Bay for a yacht club function.
They almost made it.
Thing is, that wasn’t the ending that reporter Thomas Clouse wrote. The last couple of sentences were trimmed from the story (and have been restored to the online version):
On Friday, the couple was heading to Carlin Bay for a yacht club function. They almost made it.
“The boat was not under power. She didn’t see him go in,” Mathis said.
Once Denise Fox saw her husband in the water, she frantically tried to save him. “And he just went under.”
