Stone enrages the conspiracy theorists
As we prepare for Oliver Stone’s mainstream treatment of the events of 9/11, the designed-to-win-an-Oscar-nomination “World Trade Center” – which opens Wednesday – the conspiracy theorists are coming out in force to ask a single question:
How is it that the same guy who attacked the official version of the Kennedy assassination could make a movie that is so accepting of an event that has become the focus of some of the most outrageous-sounding theories imaginable.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m not trying to debunk the theories. I’ll leave that to each person and his or her own conscience. Besides, after seeing the second edition of the documentary “Loose Change,” I’d like to hear some credible answers to the many questions the movie poses.
But think about it: The accusation that our own government was somehow involved in the attack at least sounds outrageous. You might as well ask whether there actually was a second shooter on the Grassy Knoll ?
A Los Angeles Times story by Tina Daunt quotes a trio of online sources on the subject: Jack Blood of the Prisonplanet.com radio show, Alex Jones of infowars.com and blogger John Conner , who actually calls for a boycott of the film.
What comes from all this, besides cries for another investigation (doing to the 9/11 Commission what skeptics have been doing to the Warren Report for the better part of four decades), is criticism of filmmaker Stone.
Whatever happened, the question goes, to Stone’s stones?
