Give Jon Stewart credit where it’s due
Just finished reading the Associated Press roundup of Sunday night’s Emmys broadcast . And I couldn’t help but notice that the writer, Lynn Elber , took a shot at “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart.
“The Daily Show” won two awards: for best variety, music or comedy show, plus the best writing in the same category.
Here’s what Elber wrote: “Stewart was moderately self-effacing in his speech, saying after the first honor: ‘I think this year you actually made a terrible mistake. But thank you.’ ”
Look, I don’t know any of these people. Maybe Elber, who likely had a chance to meet Stewart in person, thinks the guy is an arrogant jerk – no small stretch, since this is the entertainment industry.
As host Conan O’Brien said to potential winners, intructing them on what not to say in their acceptance speeches: “First of all, please don’t thank your parents. If you were raised in a nurturing environment, you wouldn’t be in show business.”
But here is what I do know: Stewart always shares credit with his staff, not just his co-stars but his huge writing crew – all of whom he urged to join him on stage.
So personally he may, or may not, be a jerk. So what. He’s funny. And in winning, he’s always gracious.
That he doesn’t take crap from idiots such as Tucker Carlson is a bonus.
