Ah’m Your Huckleberry

First, you should know that eightysomethings Leroy and Arlene Berry faced a difficult decision in moving to Hayden from Marysville, Wash., to be near a daughter and grandchildren. And that they were delighted to find a nice duplex on Miles Avenue when they finally did. Now, onward. Somewhere around Christmas Eve, the couple’s peace was shattered when they and others in nearby duplexes received Christmas cards from a new landlord with a note informing them that they’d have to move by spring. Seems the landlord planned to demolish the duplexes to make way for condos. Arlene was so upset by the news she couldn’t sleep, especially since Leroy was in pain at the time from an old WWII wound. In a letter to the SR on Christmas Day, granddaughter Kim Hill wrote: “My family and I are flabbergasted at this demonstration of greediness mailed in a Christmas card. Is this not the prime example of the Dickens classic tale of Scrooge and the movie villain, the Grinch ?” If it is, let’s hope that the landlord undergoes the same heart transformation as the two heels-turned-heroes.
