Some of us have faces perfect for the radio
I never got into journalism to become a celebrity. I always figured it was a way to write and still get a regular paycheck.
And for the most part, I’ve succeeded. I write, people read, and that’s where I like to leave it. But then several years ago Bob Glatzer talked me into doing a radio movie-review program with him. My wife, Mary Pat Treuthart, joined us a few years later. And now we are a weekly thing, which has raised my profile a minor bit.
But that’s where it’s going to stop. Some three years ago my friend Leslie Kelly and I did a movie-and-a-meal program for Spokane television station KHQ . We were given about 90 seconds early Thursday mornings to do our thing, which consisted of Leslie talking about an area restaurant and me trying to pair the place up with a particular movie.
LK was the star. I basically provided comic relief. In one show just before the annual Lilac Bloomsday Run , I remember Leslie asking me, “Dan, you’ve run Bloomsday, right?” And without thinking I answered, “I’ve limped it.”
The show lasted less than three months, as I recall. It ended when Leslie moved to Memphis, and KHQ changed the locks on me. Big surprise, eh?
Below : Leslie Kelly and I were once, for about 15 minutes, TV stars.
