Question No. 2 — Gay-Straight Alliance

Issue: Cd’A superintendent pitches district’s need for renovations: Amend says he’s optimistic levy will pass when March 14 arrives /Linda Ball, Coeur d’Alene Press. And: Mica Flats presentation becomes heated debate about Gay Straight club /Linda Ball, Coeur d’Alene Press

DFO: Local Republicans are wrong to hold this spring’s important levy election hostage because some of them oppose the Gay-Straight Alliance at Lake City High. They’re also wrong in not recognizing that the alliance has met criteria to become a club and, therefore, has a right to assemble on campus. They should be grateful that Lake City High has an open-club policy that allows Bible clubs to meet and ministers to come on campus. Some atheists I know mistakenly consider this a violation of the church-state separation principle. It’s a public school. And gays and straights are part of the public that has a right to assemble on campus. (And, yes, like Superintendent Harry Amend , I am a Christian believer.)

Question: Are local Republicans overreacting?
