In the upcoming redesign, as has been mentioned here before, space will be at a premium, and local news will be the priority on page one. Steve Smith expressed disappointment with the front page mix this morning, saying that the B tournament schism was buried, while the advancement of Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court dominated the page. Smith said that in the future, there will have to be a “really compelling reason” for a national or international wire story to occupy front page real estate.

A headline in today’s rail, fortunately split along the fold, says “Taking the Fifth for Spokane.” The “Taking the Fifth” part makes sense, but the “for Spokane” may have left some readers puzzled. That’s because it’s not part of the headline, but rather instructions for the editor, as opposed to “for Idaho (edition).”
