Reporting for the Camp Cowles lodge story involved staff writer Parker Howell calling publisher William Stacey Cowles for an interview.

“It made me a tad uncomfortable,” editor Steve Smith said about using Cowles as a source, but he was the last phone call made.

It’s a no-win case, senior editor Carla Savalli said, “this is the situation we’re in,” the situation of being a family-owned newspaper whose publisher also happens to be on the council board for their Inland Northwest chapter. Howell is also an Eagle Scout.
