Young man, there’s a place you can go

Ken Paulman

This morning’s meeting started off with a discussion of today’s story lineup. Some felt the YMCA sale story was a bit too incremental for the top of page one, but Carla Savalli defended the placement. An important element that may not have been clear, she said, was the fact that the park board says it has a plan to purchase the building but isn’t discussing how, exactly, that might occur.

Steve Smith said he gets the impression that the YMCA doesn’t really want to sell to the park board, and he already smells a long, protracted lawsuit. “Somehow that’s where we always end up in this town - in court.”

Spreading the huckleberry love

Valley editor Jeff Jordan wondered why today’s Huckleberries column didn’t run in the Metro and Valley editions. For those in the dark, Huckleberries (written by D.F. Oliveria ) is temporarily (?) running as a daily feature instead of a Monday column. The mini-columns are running on the front of the Idaho B section.

Smith said that today’s item would have been a good all-editions piece, but other times the column “couldn’t be more specific to Coeur d’Alene,” and it would be confusing for readers if we run the items only occasionally in other editions. The experiment will continue through mid-August, when Oliveria goes on vacation, and we’ll reassess after that, Smith said.
