Q — Did Washington Vote Right On Gay Marriage?

Justice Barbara Madsen (writing in the ruling): Washington’s 1998 Defense of Marriage Act “…is constitutional because the legislature was entitled to believe that limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples furthers procreation, essential to survival of the human race, and furthers the well-being of children by encouraging families where children are reared in homes headed by the children’s biological parents.”

DFO: I believe in human rights. I don’t believe in discrimination against gays. However, I also believe in this ruling. Marriage, from time immemorial and across all major cultures and religions, has been limited to the union of a man and a woman. Justice Barbara Madsen nails the key argument for supporting this view.
