The Slice: Some ask but do not receive
So I was out in the car last weekend and came upon some firefighters collecting donations for charity at a traffic light.
In exchange for my modest contribution, one of them handed me a red sticker.
A few minutes later, while pulling up to another stop light, I saw some people standing by the road up ahead. So I got out the sticker and placed it on the dashboard.
But when I pulled closer to the light, I realized that this time the folks up ahead were panhandlers.
And you don’t need a sticker to ignore them.
“Slice answer: In the matter of objects preschoolers got stuck on various parts of their bodies, Donnalee Herrington had a story I hadn’t heard before.
Fifty years ago, her 2-year-old son Patric found a spent .22-caliber bullet casing outdoors. Soon he had jammed it firmly onto a front tooth.
Herrington called the Fire Department. (This was before 911.) They couldn’t get it off.
Her husband came home from work. He, too, had no luck.
Her brother-in-law also tried. Same result.
So they took Patric to St. Luke’s Hospital, and the staff there finally extracted the shell — without damaging the baby tooth.
