Steve Smith had nothing but praise for Sunday’s paper, but expressed some concern about whether it got read on a sunny summer weekend. “My only concern was the amount of time needed to read it on a warm Sunday morning with Hoopfest.” The paradox, or course, is you can’t step things down just because of the weather, particularly when there’s a lot of people in town. “It’s a great showcase for the vistors,” reporter Jim Camden said.
Sunday’s story on police oversight was a high-water mark in local investigative reporting, Smith said. “If this doesn’t generate outrage over the culture of secrecy in our community, I don’t know what’s left to tell folks.” Reporter Karen Dorn Steele said she’s heard from a dozen or so people who want to share their stories, and Smith said we’ve had one cancellation “from somebody who thinks we’re too hard on the police.”
