Like we’re going to a fire
Steve Smith praised the teamwork involved in getting the GU apartment fire story covered last night. Deputy editor Tad Brooks, usually the last one to leave the newsroom, heard about the fire on the scanner and started making phone calls at about 12:05 a.m. Reporter Amy Cannata rushed to the scene and dictated a story over the phone, and Brooks, with most of the copydesk long gone for the night, was able to cram it into the Valley edition (PDF) for the last 18,000 copies of the press run.
Cannata then came back to the newsroom to write an expanded version to file online, and didn’t call it a night until after 3 a.m.
We’ll continue following the story throughout the day, and photographer Colin Mulvany has more photos that we’ll hopefully post later this afternoon.
