Sometimes stories aren’t definitive
Our goal is to publish stories that answer questions. Occasionally, we publish stories that are speculative, or perhaps raise more questions than they answer. Today, we had several such stories in prominent locations.
“Sometimes that’s just the run of the news,” Editor Steve Smith said with a shrug in this morning’s news meeting.

Alert readers might have noticed a slight change in the size of type in today’s paper. It’s fractionally larger, an attempt to address reader concerns about the readability of the paper that have arisen since the recent redesign.
For tomorrow, Paul Turner will write about Oakland, where the Zags play UCLA tomorrow. Sports will preview the game.
We’re attempting to write a story about rap star Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent), who is in Spokane for the filming of a major motion picture. So far, security is so tight that movie producers won’t allow any media access. Mr. Jackson is the occasional target of gang activity, and once was
