The Slice: Chubbedup return mystifies pet’s family

Some mysteries involve happy stories.

Browne’s Mountain resident Ruth Jackson said her family’s cat, Hyde, disappeared five months ago.

The Jacksons mourned.

Then, last week, the missing feline came back. “He is about 7-10 pounds heavier,” said Jackson.

Since returning, Hyde has made himself right at home again.

The family remains clueless about where he has been. And Hyde’s not saying. But apparently he hasn’t missed many meals.

“Possible titles for James Bond movies set in Spokane: “A View to a Dump.” — Joe Booth

“Indian Casino Royale.” — Bill Rehaume

“Dr. Thorburn.” — Chris Cook

“Here’s how to tell that you are getting old: Pullman’s Laurie Nelson has a son who is a freshman at the University of Montana. He resides in a dorm that his mom lived in back when she was a student in Missoula.

“I wonder how many other parents have had that combined rush of nostalgia/horror,” wrote Nelson.

“On having learned to type before personal computers: “I still have the reflex to reach for the carriage-return lever,” wrote John Manzer.

“Learning not to pound the keys took some time, but I eventually mastered it,” wrote Mary Ann Storms. “The habit I’ve never been able to unlearn, though, is putting two spaces between sentences. My thumb just automatically wants to twitch twice after a period.”

“In addition to politics and religion: Several readers said graphic discussion of medical procedures should be off-limits Thursday — at least while people are eating.

And Bruce Werner suggested people steer clear of “Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge trucks.”

Dave Payne, Lindsay Gray, Heather Leveque and others wondered if perhaps the Lilac City’s perceived limitations aren’t the real problem here.

2. My assertion Saturday that Spokane has a grumpy vibe.

That prompted several readers to leave me angry messages. Hmmm.

Kara Siemens offered a more effective argument. “I lived on the East Coast (New Jersey and Florida), and I have always found that the people in this town are so much friendlier and more patient than in either of those places.”

“Today’s Slice question: Do people who live on street corners ever get asked for permission before people plant signs in their yards?
