Unexplained headline; newest multimedia
The skeleton crew present at this morning’s news meeting didn’t know what to make of Thursday’s sports headline — Git-R-Done! — on Gonzaga’s big win over North Carolina in New York City. But we did notice an advertisement on page 3 of the sports section, the “Get-R-Done Special” for Aces Small Engine , a business on North Market.
Under normal deadlines, we might have considered putting a Gonzaga story on A1. It is, arguably, the biggest regular-season win in GU history (UNC, ranked at No. 2 nationally, is the highest-ranked team the Zags have ever beaten). A couple of things prevented the story being on A1. Because of the extra-large Thursday paper, we had extra work and early deadlines that made it preferable to lock in a page-one lineup earlier in the day than normal. And, frankly, no one at the table Wednesday afternoon mentioned the “what if?” concerning a possible Gonzaga win.
Great team effort
Dan Pelle worked with reporter Heather Lalley and multimedia producer Colin Mulvany on our most recent multimedia: “Dao’s Journey.” If you haven’t watched it yet, check it out. It’s a heart-warming look at a Vietnamese woman who was disfigured as an infant and now is getting cosmetic surgery and prosthetics for the first time. Heather’s story that accompanies this piece is scheduled to be published Sunday. (Heather narrated the slideshow.)
