Lewiston Trib: McMorris Talks Good Game, But …

An 83-year-old man at a veterans clinic collapses from an asthma and emphysema attack. Not having the proper equipment to help him, clinic staffers rush him to the nearest hospital. It’s too late. Clinton (Foxx) Fuller dies. It’s a tragedy. From all the available evidence, however, no one did anything wrong. Everyone did his or her best to save Fuller’s life. So what is Rep. Cathy McMorris, R-Wash., doing on her high horse? “This incident has raised questions about VA procedures and the availability of quality care for veterans,” she says. Really? How? DFO: I learned to write editorials as a news editor at the Lewiston Tribune, a job in which I assumed responsibility for reading word-for-word the provocative edits written by Bill Hall and Jim Fisher. Fisher and I, for those keeping score at home, began work for the Trib on the same day, Aug. 22, 1982. I consider that liberation day, because it was the first time I worked for a newspaper that exuded the ideals that I expected when I got into the business 10 years before. Anyway, I finally figured a way to post Trib edits at Huckleberries Online, depsite the firewall, and JF has given permission to do so. Enjoy.
