Dog days of summer

Jeff B

It’s that time in August when readers are at the lakes and parks - or at home doing projects - and many journalists are doing the same. To boot, there isn’t a lot of “breaking” news happening on most of these lazy summer days.

So, enterprise reporting again carried the day in Sunday’s paper. The first in a series of stories about area wheat farmers debuted this weekend - complete with print and online elements. See Colin Mulvany’s slideshow here . More stories and online features to come this week.

“It was a good sense of place weekend” for the newspaper, said Editor Steve Smith.

Other stories drawing comments at the table:

Jim Kershner’s history piece on the Milwaukee Road rail line; Becky Kramer’s story on local-based financial institutions; as well as stories about fires west of town and problems related to booming urban geese.
