The Slice: T. rex was tough, but no woolly bully

Sorry pal. Maybe next year.
 (The Spokesman-Review)

I don’t want to sound like a spoilsport.

I’m sure the fake-fossil Tyrannosauraus rex coming to Spokane this spring from Chicago’s Field Museum is going to be great. I might go see it myself.

Everybody loves T. rex, right?

Still, I would have preferred another visitor from the Midwest. You see, that particular museum happens to own the actual fossilized remains of a woolly mammoth unearthed in southern Spokane County in the late 1800s.

A homecoming might have been nice.

Oh, well. Maybe next time.

“Pet peeve: “When people respond to ‘How are you?’ with interesting adjectives and superlatives like ‘phenomenal,’ ‘absolutely fabulous,’ et cetera,” wrote Lori Buratto. “A simple ‘fine’ or ‘good’ would suffice.”

I agree. I always assume those personality-plus folks are masking deep, dark depression.

“Born free: Does your cat think it is the king of beasts?

If so, here’s what you can do: Take an excellent snapshot of your pet and e-mail it to The Slice.

I want to select a local cat to appear on the front of the Today section on the first day of next month. You know, so we can say “March comes in like a lion.”

Will your cat be our honorary feline?

Your photo should be a new picture and ought to hint at your animal companion’s regal attitude and demeanor.

Don’t forget to write a brief note, too. Be sure to tell a little about the junior lion in question and about yourself.

Good luck.

“C change: “I misspelled ‘adjective’ in an elementary spelling bee,” wrote Karin Carter. “I was sure the judges were wrong but when I looked it up in the dictionary, there it was, that infernal ‘c’ that has no business being in that word. I remember the incident every time I say or write the word.”

“The lists of cities graced with a Spokane Street includes: Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee, Post Falls, Pullman, Pasco, Wenatchee, Bellingham, Walla Walla, Reno, Nev., Los Angeles and Kimberley, B.C.

Feel free to add to the list.

“It turned out, of course, to be our error: But when Tuesday’s S-R births listings seemed to indicate that Kerri Pansie had given birth to babies at two different Spokane hospitals on the same day, several Slice readers admitted that they were puzzled. “Is this a conspiracy?” wrote Nancye Hensz.

“Warm-up question: If blindfolded, could you identify your garage by smell?

“Today’s Slice question: If they used their own employees as swimsuit models, what local workplace could produce a calendar you might be interested in seeing?
