The Slice: It doesn’t make life a cinch
THE SLICE
It doesn’t make life a cinch.
There are still bullies to deal with and teachers to figure out.
But there must be a comforting consistency in spending all of your childhood in one town.
Not all children get to do that, of course. That’s nothing new, though.
When Abraham Lincoln was 7, his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana. As you might have heard, he turned out all right.
So today, on his birthday, here’s my request.
If you know of a little kid who is struggling with having been uprooted and plunked down in a new place, tell that child about our 16th president.
Illinois refers to itself as the “Land of Lincoln,” and he didn’t even arrive there until he was a young man.
A boy or girl having a hard time adjusting to a move might just need a little reassurance.
Sometimes the new kid turns out to be someone special.
