Oscar has ‘Departed’ the building
Finally, we come to best film. Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton (doing her traditional “Annie Hall” thing) take the stage (Keaton, unfortunately, doing the announcing).
And the winner is … “The Departed.”
Hmmmmm. After starting out so strong, the Spanish-language guys finished weakly. I figured “Babel” would take this one.
Thing is, “The Departed” is nowhere near Scorsese’s best. Not in a career that includes films such as “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas.”
But, as is the fashion at the Oscars, people tend to win awards for films that don’t represent their best work (think Denzel Washingrton for “Training Day,” Elizabeth Taylor for “Butterfield 8”). I’m just glad that he won, period.
Peter O’Toole likely never will.
The Mexicans are just too talented. Their day will come.
