‘Home of the Brave’? It’ll likely be DVD

Dan

Got an e-mail from reader Dana Freeborn this morning regarding the shot-in-Spokane movie “Home of the Brave” :

“I’d read in the S-R that ‘Home of the Brave’ – ‘should’ – be widely released around Jan. 5, but I don’t see it listed for any local theaters. Would you happen to have any updates?

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration,”

My answer:

All I can say is that “Home of the Brave,” other than having had a big premiere on Dec. 10 in Los Angeles and subsequent three-day runs in three New York theaters a few days later, hasn’t actually opened anywhere else (though there have been several sneak showings, including a couple in Spokane theaters).

Yes, it was scheduled to open wide on Jan. 5. But according to Box Office Mojo , it made just $6,000 during that first three-theater run. For that reason and because according to it and the two major online movie-purchase sources – Fandango and Movietickets – it isn’t playing anywhere else right now, I have to think that the producers believe the film is a losing proposition and are preparing for its video release.

My belief is augmented by the fact that those critics who have seen the film (I was out of town) haven’t been particularly flattering. Most of the reviews give the film credit for its good intentions. But – click here and here and here – they go on to add that it plays like a made-for-TV film instead of a credible big-screen release.

The Curse of Films Made in Spokane strikes again.
