“It’s a good day. There are no mosquitoes out”

Thuy

… according to a stranger who spoke with assistant city editor Nancy Malone this morning.

Daily Briefing In Brief

• Bad eyesight or a Friday? Managing editor Gary Graham said when he looked at the big Geiger photo on the front page today, it looked like the Gonzaga basketball team.

• Graham said Isamu Jordan’s 7 Roller Jam story was a fun read. Spokane7 writer Tom Bowers said 7 had an excellent cover. Assistant city editor Nancy Malone read a quote from the Rollergirls co-captain:

“As a therapist I have to wear a cardigan. When it goes off the fishnets go on,” Weitz said. “Hot women and violence – what else could you ask for?”

Holy smokes, Batman!

Photo director Larry Reisnouer was happy with the print reproduction of the comet photo, essentially, the colors came out the way the photo department intended.

“They really did a nice job,” he said of the prep crew for print.

The story behind the photo can be seen in a Soundslide on Video Journal , today casually dubbed ‘Mike and Jed’s excellent adventure’ for Mike Prager and Jed Conklin’s dash into a wheat field to get this shot. S-R editors and staff viewed the Soundslide at the morning meeting.

Banned

The second issue of the Vox’s has been banned from Gonzaga Prep for its lead story on drug use.

“That was fast,” 7 editor Shadra Beesley said.

A Gonzaga Prep student was named in the story as having used drugs in the past. G-Prep staff did approach the named student for some kind of search. School administration cited the Vox for giving G-Prep a bad name.

About G-Prep banning certain publications,”We’re not challenging their right,” editor Steve Smith said. But editors also said that to be offended by that drug story is to believe “the myth” that there is no drug use in high schools.

University High has banned publications before for reasons of clutter. Central Valley High has banned publications before to prevent other “potentially offensive materials,” such as the Spokesman-Review, editors said.

Staff said the Vox should expect a surge in popularity among students at G-Prep.
