Holiday run-up

There was quite a lively discussion at the table this morning about the play of the funeral of Jimmy Marks, the Spokane Gypsy leader who fought the city for many years.

The newspaper sent a video journalist, a reporter, a columnist and a photographer to shadow Marks’ procession. The colorful ceremonies generated a print article with pictures, a column, a slideshow, and a video online.

The question was whether the newspaper would be overplaying the story, which ran at the top of A1 after Marks died, if it ran the coverage of his funeral on the cover of the region section. Managing editor Gary Graham made the call and explains his decision News Diary blog .
