It may be pulp, but it can be literature
Our ongoing serial novel, “The Shattered Glockenspiel,” has been set in motion. Chapter two, which was written by Adrienne C. Dellwo, ran in today’s print edition of 7 .
My colleagues Shadra Beesley, Tom Bowers and I chose Dellwo’s story because we thought it was the right length, it bore the right tone of comedy and suspense, Dellwo picked up on the references in the first chapter and developed them in an interesting way and, maybe most of all, her piece showed a tight writing style that, for the most part, avoided clichés while keeping her use of adjectives and adverbs to a minimum .
Active verbs, people, active verbs.
But our choice was merely one opinion. Which is why we decided to post another six chapters online . That way we figured not only could we reward what we considered the best of the 34 potential second chapters but we would create seven different story lines.
And the thought of that blows our mind.
Only one of those story lines will run in the print edition. But we’re hoping that those of you who want to contribute keep trying. We’re going to publish 10 more chapters over the next 10 months.
Let’s make some literature.
