Go Vox!
Steve Smith started the meeting today by Congratulating the Vox staff for winning the Group Creativity award at the Chase Awards . Steve also commended Vox staffers Ashley Johnson and Kate Clark for winning other awards as well.
Dan Hansen said he liked the headline Fighting back on the Chiefs story. Joe Palmquist said he has already taken a call from a loyal Chiefs fan accusing the paper of having a bias toward Everett because the (very nice) photo with the story shows a Chief getting hit.
There was a conversation about the use of the word transient in the A1 headline
Shot transient identified
. Steve mentioned that the newspaper has to be careful in the way the person who was shot is characterized. Kevin Graman said he thought the word was pejorative. David Wasson said that they had been trying to find a way get across to the reader quickly and clearly some idea of who this person was when the word was chosen for the lead.
Most of the folks around the table seemed to think the word transient was acceptable for this use.
Addy Hatch said she thought the
Shonto Pete
story should have been moved out to A1 instead of the bottom of B1 because of the new information given by Shonto’s attorney. Steve said that if there was a bit more information or an interview with Shonto he would have been in favor of moving it but thought it was fine as is.
Steve also said that the
Water park gets go-ahead
story was pretty important so he didn’t mind it being at the top of B1.
Steve said that he thought John Craig did a nice job on the story and has brought a nice touch to the county beat. Steve said young reporters could learn a lot form Craig.
Looking ahead:
We are looking into childhood dental services and we are following the Jerome Alford case.
Be well.
